Hummingbird Takes Flight

It’s been a surprising bit of joy to share the Hummingbird with our testers, and to see their expressions of delight when they see the Hummingbird for the first time.

Kind of like our family corgi Thimble (Miss T to some), the Dye Candy Hummingbird hair color applicator always brings a smile to people’s faces.

I didn’t purposefully set out to create a bird-like shape, the functionality always drove the design: her long, pointed “beak” to part hair and distribute color, her squooshy little pot-belly for easy squeezing and constant, even air flow. And although functionality and easy home hair coloring always came first, it was important to me that she be beautiful, too—both to hold and behold. When I finally got the prototype I’d envisioned, and it worked just as I’d imagined all those years ago struggling with my own home hair color, my son said she looked like a hummingbird. And it just stuck.

So I asked local, amazingly talented animator Nathaniel Akin (@filmblender), to collaborate with me, to give our Hummingbird wings and let her really take flight. Brains and beauty all in one package? That’s my girl! (Or should I say, my bird!)
